Background

The British Museum (Phase 1) project involved the construction of a new 16,000m2 research and storage facility in Wokingham, in partnership with the University of Reading. The primary purpose of this facility was to house and preserve the British Museum’s extensive collection of ancient artifacts, including sculptures, mosaics archaeological assemblages, and historic cast collections. Additionally, the building was designed to provide study space for academics, researchers, students, and members of the public who could access the collection by appointment. The project is crucial for preserving the Museum’s collection and ensuring its accessibility for future generations.

Our Solution

In partnership with Graham Construction, Rotec was appointed to supply and install a total of 108 steel doors for the facility. The doors consisted of a combination of 34 Standard Steel Doors and 65 Fire-Rated Doors, comprising both single and double doors for both internal and external use. The installation of the steel doors provided the necessary protection for the facility and its valuable artifacts. The doors met regulatory compliance standards and obtained the required certifications, demonstrating their quality and reliability.

Rotec went beyond standard installations by creating bespoke steel doors and panels to serve as a façade, covering the external plant rooms. This solution incorporated steel doors and supporting box sections, allowing the team to fil openings up to 8 meters in height. This innovative approach not only provided functional benefits but also enhanced the visual appeal of the facility.

To address the challenge of steelwork clashes and close proximity of services, Rotec developed customised designs above the openings of some of the roller shutters. These designs mitigated the clashes and ensured a seamless integration of the doors and the overall structure.

Furthermore, Rotec manufactured a range of plant room doors, which were arranged as a bank of risers along the corridors. Each door was designed to meet the specific fire rating requirements of the room it served, ensuring comprehensive fire protection throughout the facility.

Rotec’s Fire-rated doors underwent rigorous testing and received approval from Exova Warrington Fire, affirming their compliance with regulatory standards. The certification instilled confidence in the project team, assuring them that the doors would provide necessary fire protection to safeguard the facility and its priceless contents.
